LEDGEVIEW (AP) - A new landfill gas-to-energy facility in the town of Ledgeview was unveiled Friday by Brown County officials to make use of some 4 million tons of garbage accumulated in the site.

Solid waste department director Chuck Larscheid said the $3.8 million facility will pay for itself in six to eight years.

Electricity produced from the gas will be sold to Wisconsin Public Service Corp.

Officials said it will generate enough to supply the equivalent of 80 percent of Ledgeview residents.

The landfill opened in 1976 and closed in 2003. The gas-to-energy process at the site is expected to last 11 years.
