MADISON (AP) - Local governments in Wisconsin have submitted more than 1,000 applications to get a slice of the federal stimulus.

The state Department of Transportation said Monday it received 1,034 applications for about $158 million in federal stimulus money. It did not immediately release how much it would cost to fund all the projects requested.

The department will review the applications to make sure they meet the federal guidelines and then determine which projects will receive money.

Bids could be let on the projects as early as June.

The deadline for communities to submit the applications was April 8.
