The first six months of 2009 did not treat dairy producers well
Their average milk check was 45-50% below what it was for the same period in 2008. The May milk price for Wisconsin dairy farmers will average just $11.60 per hundred or 99 cents a gallon, and the June price looks to be a dime lower than that. Still, Wisconsin's milk price is a dime higher than the national average and around $1.20 higher than the average price for milk in California, Idaho and Utah.
One of the main concernsfor dairy is the price of cheese. For the first six months, Block Cheese averaged $1.21 a pound, well below the 2008 average of $1.95 and 10 cents below the 10 year average.
While prices are expected to rise throughout the second half of 2009, most analysts are not looking for $15.00 milk until we turn the calendar to 2010.
