It's a great day for Wisconsin Agriculture as the final version of the state budget does not contain the senate provision to change the definition of agricultural land for tax purposes. Thanks to the combined efforts of agricultural and commodity groups and industry related allies state senators got the message that by changing the definition of ag land they would have made use value assessment null and void on nearly 1 million acres of Wisconsin farmland raising property taxes by thousands of dollars for state producers.
The wisconsin farm bureau which spearheaded this industry wide opposition
gave credit to State Senator Kathleen Vinehout for her efforts on the senate side. While Speaker Mike Sheridan, along with representative Mary Hubler and
Amy Sue Vruwink were thanked for their leadership on this issue in the State
Assembly. Producers and growers should also be thanked for the input their shared with their elected officials and for also sharing their story through the media so that the general public could understand what the impact of this proposed change would have meant to states ag economy .
