WI WORKS:

In WI Works this morning, "Just Between Friends Consignment" is a new way to host a rummage sale. Sellers can price their items, drop them off, then leave... much more convenient, than having to sit in your garage for 3 days! There is no booth cost, but "Just Between Friends" does get a percentage of the profit. On April 3-5th at the Halloween Express store location in Appleton (603 N. Westhill Blvd), shoppers and sellers can rummage away. Visit http://appleton.jbfsale.com/ for further details.

HEALTHWATCH:

Many patients report not getting a colonoscopy. But there may be new motivation for some. If a blood test showed your risk of colon cancer was elevated by more than 800% would you have a colonoscopy? Researchers are hunting for genetic clues to spot high-risk patients. Doctors say it's clear that if they could identify individuals who have a higher risk, and focus on screening these individuals, they might be probably much more effective than screening everyone. One medical team is focusing on a protein called TGF Beta. It helps limit cell growth. But when a mutation occurs, the cells don't get the signal, and that skyrockets the risk of colon cancer. Medical experts say about 12% of patients with colorectal cancer have lower expression of the type 1 TGF Beta receptor, and have an about 870% increased risk of colorectal cancer. That extreme degree of risk makes this a target for a potential blood test, which is the goal of on-going research. In the meantime, everyone age 50 and older should have some sort of colon screening done, or sooner if you have family history of colon cancer.
