DETROIT (AP) — A charitable foundation has awarded $5 million in grants to Detroit organizations to develop arts programs, increase training opportunities in health care and green industries and expand the availability of free Internet access to the public.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation announced the grants Wednesday in Detroit.

The Detroit Free Press reports that the largest grant is for $1.08 million. It will fund a three-year collaboration between the Arts League and the Cranbrook Institute of Science that begins in January.

Detroit-based artists will perform at schools, churches, community centers and other spots in the city. Cranbrook educational programs will complement the performances.
