On July 18, 1996, 12 tornadoes touched down in the state of Wisconsin. The rarest of tornadoes, an F-5, practically wiped out the town of Oakfield in Fond du Lac County.
The tornado touched down west of Oakfield as an F-3, then grew to an F-4 as it approached town, and the storm hit F-5 status 1-4 miles west of town. When it hit Oakfield, winds were in excess of 260mph.
