WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak, (D-Menominee) announced Child and Family Services of the Upper Peninsula, Inc. and the Great Lakes Center for Youth Development, both in Marquette, have received grants totaling $580,000 to improve services. The grants were awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

“These organizations are helping to strengthen our communities by providing assistance in times of crisis to families and young people across the Upper Peninsula,” Stupak said. “With many families struggling as a result of the current economic climate, the work being done by these organizations to provide support and stability is more important than ever. I am pleased Health and Human Services has recognized the existing need for these services and awarded this funding to Child and Family Services of the Upper Peninsula and the Great Lakes Center for Youth Development.”

Child and Family Services of Upper Michigan, Inc. received $80,000 to implement a comprehensive emergency shelter and family-strengthening program called Project: HOPE East. Project: HOPE East is designed to reunify runaway and homeless youth with their families, and ensure the youth have the essential building blocks to transition into healthy adulthood. The grant was awarded through the Family and Youth Services Bureau (FYSB) Basic Center program. Through the program, FYSB works to establish or strengthen community-based programs that addressed the immediate needs of runaway and homeless youth and their families.

Great Lakes Center for Youth Development received $500,000 to help faith-based and community organizations maximize social impact as they provide services to those most in need. The project objective is to work with nonprofit organizations to increase organizational sustainability and effectiveness, enhance organizational ability to provide social services, and create collaborations. The grant was awarded through the Office of Community Service Compassion Capital Fund (CCF) Demonstration Program. The CCF serves to expand and strengthen the role of organizations in their ability to provide social services to low-income communities.
