WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak (D-Menominee) announced Caspian, Iron River and Mackinac Island have received a total of $19.7 million in federal funding for water and wastewater system improvements.

The funding, both loans and grants, was awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Water and Environmental Program - through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“This is a significant investment of stimulus funding in Northern Michigan that will help these communities update infrastructure, create jobs and provide safe drinking water to the surrounding areas,” Stupak said. “I appreciate Secretary Vilsack’s continued support of our rural communities. This funding will help create or retain jobs now, while securing critical water and wastewater systems for the future.”

Projects are as follows:

The city of Caspian received a $1,000,000 loan and a $3,000,000 grant for wastewater system improvements.

The city of Iron River received a $3,584,000 loan and a $1,870,000 grant for water system improvements.

Mackinac Island received a $7,733,000 loan and a $2,578,000 grant for wastewater system improvements.

The USDA Rural Development’s Water and Environmental Program provides loans and grants to ensure that the necessary investments are made in water and wastewater infrastructure to deliver safe drinking water and to protect the environment in rural areas.

To date, the USDA has announced $1.96 billion for water and environmental projects throughout the country.
