There are many varieties of moths, and most of them are destructive. A moth goes through four stages of life: egg, larva, pupae and adult. Of these, the larval, or caterpillar stage, is the one that can cause problems. Some species are responsible for the destruction of hundreds of acres of forests, while others in your home spend their time munching on clothing or pantry items. The eggs generally enter your home attached to clothing or inside dry foods. Pet foods, especially bird seed, can carry moth eggs, since they are not as rigorously inspected as food for human consumption. When the eggs hatch, the caterpillars begin feeding until they form cocoons to transform into the adult moths. The adults do not eat, but spend their brief lives seeking to reproduce. This is when they are most vulnerable. Trapping is the most successful method of getting rid of them. A reputable pest control professional may advise you as to the placement and proper use of these traps.
