The water that flows from your tap enters your home through a single water service pipe under your property. Either you receive water from the city supply, or from a well on your property. The pipeline is buried below the frost level in your yard and extends from the city water main to a meter valve at your home. The meter measures the amount of water your home consumes. From the meter, a single trunk line travels the center girder underneath your home, or through the slab foundation. At intervals along the way, smaller branch lines connect to the trunk line to service the fixtures throughout the house. Well water, on the other hand, is stored in a tank until needed and should flow through the lines at a rate of six gallons per minute. Well water should be checked periodically for purity. There are easy-to-use tester kits available for this.
