With the new nutrition label, healthy eating has become easier. Food labels help you choose foods that will help you follow a healthy diet. Claims can now be used if a food meets new legal standards, so you can be confident in what the labels are claiming. Cholesterol is an important factor in your diet because too much cholesterol can lead to heart disease. A cholesterol free claim means that there are less than two milligrams of cholesterol and two grams, or less, of saturated fat per serving. A low cholesterol claim indicates there are twenty milligrams of cholesterol or less. A low cholesterol claim also must have two grams or less of saturated fat per serving. A reduced cholesterol claim must have at least twenty-five percent less cholesterol than the higher-cholesterol version. Keep in mind that the American Heart Association recommends eating less than three hundred milligrams of cholesterol each day. For more information on reading the new food labels, contact a health care professional.
