Waunakee beats Kimberly 34-21 for Div. 2 title.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Senior Kyle Acker ran for two touchdowns in the second half to help Waunakee earn a 34-21 victory over Kimberly in the WIAA Division 2 state football championships Friday at Camp Randall.
While the Warriors won their third state championship, the victory spoiled Kimberly's bid for a third consecutive state title. Waunakee, which was appearing in its first title game since 2005, clinched titles in 1999 and 2002.
Acker had 21 carries for 190 yards in the win, including 11 rushes for 112 yards in the second half. The linebacker scored on eight- and six-yard TD runs.
Waunakee lineman Jack Irwin swatted the ball out of Kimberly quarterback Austin Rogers' hands at midfield, picked up the ball at the 36-yard line and ran in for a touchdown to put the game out of reach 34-14 with 5:40 left.
Reedsburg tops West De Pere 34-27 for Div. 3 titleMADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Junior quarterback Chad Mazur ran for two touchdowns in the second half and threw for one score to lead Reedsburg to its first WIAA Division 3 state football title Friday, beating West De Pere 34-27 at Camp Randall Stadium.
Mazur finished with 14 carries for 184 yards and the two TDs. Senior Shane Rockweiler added 114 yards and two scores on 15 attempts for the Beavers (11-3).
Mazur had a 59-yard TD run at the end of the third quarter. Then in the fourth quarter he added a 66-yard TD run, breaking several tackles along the way.
Reedsburg was playing in its second straight state title game. In last year's championship it lost by one point to Waupaca.
West De Pere (12-2) had its 12-game winning streak snapped. It was making its first state championship appearance.
