ATM scam uses technology to empty bank accounts

WFRV News

A new twist on an old scam has people missing money from their bank accounts as thieves are using new high-tech ATM skimmers to steal account information.

In a traditional skimming scam a device is placed into the slot where you insert your card. It can steal information stored on the magnetic strip, when you swipe your card.

The new twist? Clear plastic overlays are also placed on top of the pin pad to capture your number. Some skimmers can even text the stolen bank account information and pins directly to to the scammer.

The good news for consumers is if a theif steals money from your accounts or makes fraudulent charges, banks will likely make good on the problem.
