(WFRV-De Pere) The mother of a De Pere soldier in Fort Hood is counting her blessings, after hearing her son is safe and unharmed.
23 year-old Jeremy Gossen reached his mother on his cell phone before she even heard about the shootings. At the time, he was under lock-down on the base.
“He filled me in and my heart started racing and my stomach was doing flip-flops,” said Amy Kakwitch, Gossen’s mother. “It was almost more scary than when he was in Iraq.”
Gossen is a helicopter mechanic with the 404th Aviation Support Battalion in Fort Hood.
Gossen’s wife, April, is a nanny on the base. Both are graduates of West De Pere High School.
Kakwitch visited the couple at Fort Hood in July.
“I know it will hit me later tonight when I’m trying to fall asleep the immensity of it all,” said Kakwitch.
Channel 5’s Jenna Sachs did speak with Jeremy Gossen on the phone, but he couldn’t divulge any information about his location during the shootings. He could only say he was healthy and unharmed.
His mother calls the shooting spree “a tragedy,” that hit too close to home.
“I pray for the families who have lost loved ones there. Pray for the people that are wounded that they make recoveries,” said Kakwitch.
