A 19-year old soldier from Peshtigo has died from injuries he received while serving in Afghanistan.

Steven Drees suffered a wound to the eye when he was hit by gunfire as he rode in a Humvee with members of his platoon this past week.  He was taken to a hospital in Frankfurt, Germany for treatment but doctors informed family members the injuries were critical.

Drees' mother, father and twin brother flew to Germany on Friday to say goodbye.  Drees' wishes to be an organ donor were granted.  Drees died Saturday, June 27th around 7:00pm central time.

Steven Drees was assigned to the Fourth Infantry, non-mechanized division of Fort Carson, Colorado.  Last month, his unit was sent to Afghanistan.  Drees was deployed on May 26th, which was his 19th birthday.

Drees was a 2008 graduate of Peshtigo High School.
