ALLOUEZ (WFRV) – A Spring honor flight has been planned to fly veterans to see D.C. war memorials, without charge.
The Old Glory Honor Flight organization announced Monday it intends to send 100 veterans to the Nation’s Capitol April 8 of this year.
The non-profit organization sent about 100 northeast Wisconsin based ex-military men and women on the honor flight in October.
The group is heavily recruiting World War II veterans, because they are some of the oldest warriors in the country. Drew MacDonald, Old Glory’s president, says 900 WWII veterans die every day. Of the 400 on the group's waiting list, 4 have already died before going to D.C. “I’m not going to be happy until every single World War II vet is on our list,” MacDonald said Monday.
MacDonald is looking to recruit World War II veterans like Russell Kriwanek . The 85-year-old took an honor flight similar to Old Glory’s in April. The Allouez army-man says many who served with him are in danger of never seeing the monuments erected in their honor. “90 percent of them are older than I am,” Kriwanek tells Channel 5’s Hilary Golston. “So, it’s getting to the crunch time.”
