MILWAUKEE (AP) — A report that says federal stimulus funding saved or created more than 10,000 jobs in Wisconsin is filled with errors and inflated numbers.
A review by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel finds that some jobs were mistakenly counted twice and other jobs were listed as saved, even though no funding had been received and no work had started.
In one example, the Parkland Sanitary District in Douglas County listed 100 jobs as created or save, mistakenly inflated by 95 positions. District treasurer Eric Shaffer says he tried to correct the mistake, but was told that it was too late for the federal reporting deadline.
The Journal Sentinel's review found errors with information submitted by local governments and contractors reported directly to the federal government. No problems were found with state-submitted data.
