Brewers select high school pitcher in 1st Round of MLB Draft

MILWAUKEE, WI – The Milwaukee Brewers selected RHP Dylan Covey out of Maranatha High School in Pasadena, Calif. with the 14th overall pick in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.

Covey, 18, went 7-1 with a 0.40 ERA and 3 saves with 138 strikeouts compared to 20 walks in 70.2 innings pitched for Maranatha (CA) High School this season. Covey was recently named as Gatorade’s California Baseball Player of the Year. In 2009, he participated in the AFLAC All-American Game at Petco Park.

“Our goal as a scouting staff is to build a championship caliber pitching staff and field a lineup that is young and durable that will keep us competitive at the championship level for the long term and our selection of Dylan Covey tonight fits that criteria,” said Seid.

The 2010 First-Year Player Draft will continue tomorrow from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. CT for Rounds 2-30. The Draft will resume on Wednesday for Rounds 31-50 at 11 a.m. CT and will continue through its conclusion (ending approximately at 3 p.m.)
