The Carolina Hurricanes have placed goaltender Cam Ward on injured reserve, the club announced Wednesday.

Ward is expected to miss 3-to-4 weeks after suffering a leg laceration in the team's loss to the Blue Jackets on November 7.

In a freak collision, Ward was cut on the left upper leg just below the groin by Jackets forward Rick Nash's skate and received stitches for the injury. As he skated off the ice, helped by Carolina staff, drops of blood could be seen hitting the ice in a trail behind him.

Ward spent Saturday and Sunday in Riverside Methodist Hospital in Ohio's capital city before returning to Raleigh on Monday.

The 25-year-old is 2-9-3 with a 2.97 goals-against average this season. Backup Michael Leighton and recently signed veteran netminder Manny Legace will take over in Ward's absence.

Also Wednesday, Carolina recalled defenseman Bryan Rodney from Albany of the American Hockey League.
